Chemical engineering must meet the scientific and technological needs of process industries, namely, competitiveness, meeting changing economic demand, innovation and respect for societal and environmental constraints. Through the development of innovative concepts and methodologies, it has to take up the challenge of proposing processes involving sustainable technologies for sustainable products and green products.
This requires a scientific approach with a multidisciplinary and multiscale integrated system approach of length and time, applied to the different molecular processes and often coupled transfers of matter, heat and momentum that occur at different scales of the (bio)chemical production chain.
This multiscale approach to process engineering, which combines the attraction of market-pull markets with a demand for technological innovation (technology push), is strongly mobilized on the engineering of “green products / green processes” and on the intensification of processes, to produce much more and better while consuming much less, and to produce more sustainable molecules with environmental and economic stakes.
