There are desires that we feel, inadequacies that we notice, improvements that we consider… As for each of these situations, it is from the declaration of an expected value that we recognize the objective notion.

This book explores this process within the industrial sector, starting from an objective declaration and leading to the associated performance expression. The notion of system is approached as well as that of the observer and their intentions. The concept of variable, that which carries the facets necessary to achieve the objective, is revisited and a distinction between requirement (inadequacy or improvement) and desire is thus made, for the objective, in compliance with such facets’ values.

Fuzzy subsets theory is used to handle symbolic and numerical values of both the objective and the measurement. This theory is also used to compute the performance expression, either measurement or evaluation. Mr. C.C., Associate Manager of a production line in an industrial automation company, our partner in these works, will illustrate the concepts tackled.

1. The Industrial System.
2. Industrial Objectives: The Variable.
3. Industrial Objectives: The Value.
4. Industrial Objectives: A Fuzzy Formalization to Move from Natural Language to Numbers.
5. Industrial Objectives: Outlining Performance Expression.
6. Industrial Objectives: Computation of Performance Expression of the Desire-Objective.
7. Industrial Objectives: Computation of the Performance Expression of the Requirement-Objective.
